Link Baiting Internet Marketing
One of the hottest trends in Internet Promoting today is Link Baiting.
If you haven't heard of Link Baiting yet, odds are you've already fallen victim to it. Don't worry though, Link Baiting won't steal your personal information but it absolutely will drive real traffic to your website and rapidly build your number of incoming links. It's one of the more recent publically known search engine optimization strategies and can be extremely effective when done right.
The idea of Link Baiting is simple: Create a buzz or spectacle on your website that will cause people to link to it. The more outrageous, convtroversial and out of the ordinary the better.
Jim Westergren's Link Bait Post has some great ideas on how to create link bait for your website from writing something convtroversial, disagreeing with an authority or even writing something outrageous and using twisted logic to back it up. Check out the entire list over at Jim's site for details.
Link baiting is becoming one of the more popular ways today to get links. I know what your thinking, a traditional business website is no place for writing controversial articles. That's not entirely true though, it can be an interesting article, video, images, anything.. and it doesn't have to be R rated.
Here are some Link Bait examples I've done for clients in the past:
The Hyundai Genesis Crash Test:vs. an Audi A8 Link Bait for a Hyundai Dealership -> Car Dealer Promotions
The video (link removed at client request) showed the Audi A8 and Hyundai Genesis colliding at high speed in a crash test. The angle of the video showed the Hyundai Genesis plowing through the center of the Audi A8.
The result, the Audi A8 was totalled, but the Hyundai Genesis appeared to be barely harmed at all. The result, home page links from local news outlets after a few emails, lots of blogger activity, homepage links and social networking links out the wazoo. In a kicker I found to be funny, one of the competitors in that market an Audi/BMW dealer linked to the page with the video and a disclaimer about how the Audi A8 was a superior vehicle! Thanks for the link guys!
The Holiday Sweepstakes Link Bait for a Volkswagen Dealership -> Car Dealer Promotions
A simple twelve days of christmas contest widely promoted online through local forums, blogs, social networking sites. Anytime there is the potential for a free gift or prize it's not hard to generate buzz.
Each day the dealer rotated the prize(s) being given away, the culmination was a new car given away on the final day before christmas. Granted, not every business can give away a $30,000 car - but anything free will generate links. I have used similar promotions with a sweepstakes company nearly 10 years ago aiding them in getting out their message. I just didn't know to call it link-baiting back then.
Of course the thing to remember is that not only does this actually generate new links to your website, but it will also create real traffic and business. Promotions like this should be done irregardless of links or not, atleast twice a year in my opinion.
