Internet Marketing for Small Business > Building Inbound Links and Backlinks

SEO Link Building: 26 Rules for Building Backlinks & Inbound Links for Search Engine Optimization

SEO Link Building backlinks

Building Backlinks or "Inbound Links" to your website is important. There is no question about that. (A Backlink is a link on another website, to your website).A website without any backlinks will never have search engine rank for anything of value. When building links to your website there are some general rules to consider.

Link Building SEO: The Backlinks Law of Order and Influence:

  • 1. Having more Backlinks is better then having Fewer Backlinks.

  • 2. Having Backlinks from websites in supportive genres is better then non-specific websites that you have little in common with. (You are promoting a plumbers website, a link from an e-store that sells plumbing supplies among other things, a link in an article about someone who refurbished their bathroom and ktchen)

  • 3. Having Backlinks from .EDU domains and .GOV domains posess an intrinsic value greater then non-specific or supportive genre backlinks.

  • 4. Having Backlinks from websites in your web genre or theme is better then other non-specific websites (Your website is about plumbing, having a website about horse stalls linking to you is not as valuable as another plumbing site. Likewise a website about plumbing linking to you is better then a website with a supportive theme)

  • 5. Having Backlinks from authority websites is better then non-authority websites. (A horse stall website that is considered the authority by search engines on its topic, will provide more benefit to you then a low ranking plumbing website that links to you)

  • 6. Having Backlinks from authority websites in your web genre or theme is better then other non-specific authority sites. (The highly regarded world plumbers association website writes an article about your company and links to you. Very nice)

Backlinks for fun and profit - Link Building Rules for SEO

  • 1. Creating many backlinks is a good thing. Creating many backlinks, very quickly or in an unnatural manner is a good way for your website to be flagged by search engines as being "over optimized", or black hatted. This is more important a consideration on newer websites rather then older more established sites.

  • 2. Creating too many backlinks from a single source such as blog comments, forum posts, etc appears unnatural. Links typically, but not always come from a variet of sources.

  • 3. Getting links from bad neighborhoods is a bad idea.
  • 4. Having sitewide backlinks smells of paid links , is unnatural and search engines don't like it.

  • 5. Having too many links within your IP range is not benefitial. Search engines have caught onto the idea of someone creating multiple webpages on different domains through the same website host.

  • 6. Links that say "url" or "Visit website" in their anchor text or alt description are less valuable then descriptive text links such as "Cincinnati Plumbers Association"

  • 7. Backlinks that are in in the footer of a website are less valuable then links in the body of the text content on a webpage.

  • 8. Backlinks that are near words that say "Paid Sponsors" or "Please visit our Sponsors" or any other common advertiser or outbound link disclaimer are less valuable. Search engines are in the business of understanding search, remember it's their business to figure out the best results to provide their search visitors. Don't underestimate them.

  • 9. Backlinks that disappear after 30 days (paid links for instance) are of limited usefulness - unless you renew of course, then see point 8.

  • 10. Linking back to another page in order to get a Backlink makes it a Recipricol link, which is far less valuable. If you do this be sure to check and ensure they continue to keep the link to your website online. Otherwise you are providing them a free backlink.

  • 11. Backlinks located in the actual body of content are better, we've established that much. Even better when that content reflects the same theme of your website. (An article about plumbing, links to you inside the body of text as a reference) Wikipedia is good at this, learn from Wikipedia.

  • 12. Backlinks that use rel=nofollow (blogs, forums) are useless on most search engines.

  • 13. Backlinks that use redirects, or scripting that search engines cannot follow are useless.

  • 14. Backlinks from websites that have more then 15 outbound links are low quality. 10 or less is better.

  • 15. Backlinks from a website "Links Page" fall into the same category point number 8 for "paid sponsors". Does anyone use links pages anymore?

  • 16. Remember web-rings? They are your friends. They are similar in theme to your website. Don't be afraid to join them. Web 1.0 still has it's uses.

  • 17. If you plan to use blackhat techniques or tools to create massive backlinks don't be surprised when your website is shut down in rapid fashion. If you go blackhat, do your research first. Use doorway pages - LOTS of them. Never ever create backlinks directly to your main website unless your willing to lose the domain. (If your going white/gray - disregard)

  • 18. Deep-Linking is natural linking. A Deep Link is a backlink to an interior page of your website, rather then your home domain. For instance rather then Search Engine Optimization Firm which goes to my domain homepage, a more benefitial, natural link would be Search Engine Optimization Strategies which goes to an interior page on my site about SEO strategies.

  • 19. Links from bad neighborhoods are worthless. A website that has been banned does you no favors by linking to you.
  • 20. Enough SPAM links or bad neighborhood links will negatively effect your rankings. "But XXX at XXX Search Engine said they don't hold webmasters responsible for backlinks since they don't have control over who links to them" Of course they will say that, saying anything else would open the floodgates.
